job

Posted by Mike Foster:

Our work can either bring a lot of pleasure or a lot of frustration. Malcolm Gladwell says that in order to be satisfied with your job you need three things. Sadly most people don’t even have 2 out of 3.

1. AUTONOMY: You have a say in what you do day to day

2. COMPLEXITY: Your work can’t be mind numbing and repetitive.

3. CONNECTION BETWEEN EFFORT AND REWARD: You see the results from your work.

So when it comes to your job, how many of these traits do you have?

sorry to hear that sean…any consideration of a possible job change?

  • http://twitter.com/HisGirl77 Carol Asher

One of the three, sort of.

  • Mike

    All 3. LOVE IT!

The situation is complicated… you never know though, but, for right now, no considerations are on the horizons

I feel like at times I got all three, but not all the time. That is probably because I really do not have a defined daily job.

The great human3rror told me that he is helping me discover what I am curious about. I liked that. He said curiosity helps you discover more, work harder, and continue to grow.

great thoughts kyle! i definitely agree with human3error and your point about how sometimes you have all 3 and sometimes you dont…even in the same job….

This might not help (not really knowing your exact situation) but here is a list of a lot of great jobs that you could check out.

i have all 3…but they are often being redefined, re-aligned, stretched, and re-shaped…

I'm finding that Purpose is the key. If I feel like I have a purpose, a focus, and doing something that is making a difference and using my skills, talents, abilities to their fullest, then I feel fulfilled. It's when I feel purpose-less that I begin to wonder why I am here. The mind numbing, repetitive and boring are spirit killers.

    My job–0

My dad (senior minister) use to always say that he enjoyed mowing the yard because it was something he could tangibly see that he accomplished that week.
My question to him was…then why am I mowing the yard?

    Great post.

All 3 – I work as the CTO of a medical education company. I make all the major technical decisions, my job is challenging, and it's financially as well as personally and professionally rewarding – every improvement we make to our technical infrastructure I see in increased client satisfaction as well as more clients that we can help… :)

    thats funny :)

4 weeks ago I had MAYBE #1 and #2 on occasion with #3 nowhere to be found. Thankfully, that all changed and now I feel like I've got all 3 in the bag. I'd be blessed in the regular economy. That I've been able to reach all 3 of those in this economy -#3 appears in many ways, including financial- is nothing short of amazing.

I have some level of all 3 at my job, but I hate it anyway. I'm coming off a 15 hour day that just might be clouding my judgment a teensy bit.

I have all 3 – but I've had to sacrifice a lot of comforts and happiness to have a job that I love.

So even though I have all 3 things, it may give me JOB satisifcation, but it does not give me LIFE satisfaction.

are halfies okay? if so, 1.5 then.

i like my job a lot and i love my church. but i know it isn't what i am meant to do for much longer. so i work and wait patiently for the Lord until He says what's next.
