THE NUMBER ONE SIGN A FALLEN LEADER WILL COME BACK

Posted by Mike Foster:
I consider it a privilege to work with individuals who are rebuilding their lives after a significant failure in leadership.
Often when I’m doing this I’m asked this question by others:
Will they make it? How do you know they won’t fall again?
I don’t have crystal ball but in my experience, if had to pick one character trait that is the best indicator that someone is going to come back strong it would be this….SIMPLE HUMILITY.
When a leader fully embraces his brokeness, openly talks about his failure with others, and consistently lives in a posture of humility, I can almost guarantee 100% success.
But when a leader tips into arrogance, self reliance, and an overall tone of they got it all figured out, I become worried.
Humility drives second chances. Arrogance will leave a cloud of questions.

I love how your heart is aimed toward helping those who need second chances. I’m thanking God you’re there for the people whose paths He allows you to cross.
Makes sense. I agree. The challenge is then to stay humble and not forget in the future. I think the trick to doing that is daily reminder of who God is, our brokeness, our past failures (we’re not defined by our past but it reminds us of our brokeness and utter dependence on God), and that we’re valuable in spite of all this and can be used by God. I think the only way to be reminded of this each day is to spend time with God each day to let him remind us of all these things. I think then we stay humble and avoid arrogance and pride in the future.
I agree with but…
the difficulty, I’m speaking mostly to pastors, is that they are very good at the talk.
That’s why their failure was hidden for so long, that’s why people ignore it for so long…they know how to talk a good talk.
Talking about it is a great first step, but those around you should be able to see it.
I see it when a leader fails, talks about, gets some help and then…stops talking about themselves and getting their position back. I see it when they humble themselves and press on; not to earn their position back, but to truly become a humble servant.

This is a sure indicator. God honors humility and people respect it.
@thanks jason. i love it too.
@drew right on. maintaing that spirit of humility becomes even more challenging as success comes. btw, i would totally say this applies for any leader wanting to avoid a fall.
@michael totally agree. so true. on that point, (this is probably another subject i will probably talk about later) but any leader where their goal is to simply get back to the same position they were in before is uninspiring to me and brokeness and pain that has been wasted. love your thots!
I agree… no buts… you nailed it Mike: simple humility
Aren’t we all POTSC?
Who is still on Plan A without a single mis-step or failure?
Arrogance is ALWAYS a danger sign.
Humility is the way of Jesus and the way of those who would follow.
Great words Mike. I think brokenness is the essence of reality. If I hadn’t gone through my junk, i’d still be an arrogant S.O.B. Now, I’m simply more conscious of my need for a loving and faithful Daddy… and keenly aware of the fact that I’m capable of being an S.O.B.

great post…I shared it with my accountability group for them to help keep me accountable. Any sign of arrogance instead of humility and they should press me hard…this nailed my past behavior…praise God for His grace and second chances!
