Since the criteria seems to be things like the number of home improvement stores, steak houses, pickup trucks and motorcycles per capita, and manly occupations (fire fighters, police officers, construction workers and EMT personnel) I am not surprised Portland ranks low. We eat healthy, drive more environmentally friendly cars, care about the environment and may spend less on homes due to that, and since we have been very had hit by the economy the occupations are down.

What makes a man “manly”? A heart after God, tenderness, loving your neighbor, leadership, sacrifice, generosity, defending the weak, protecting women/children, and grace….radical grace! (I think you are doing just fine in your manliness Mike!)

I think the word manly describes “what it means to be a man”. Within different cultures there is a different demographic of “Man-Swagger” if you wanna call it that ha-ha. In Alaska, we have the scruffy, burly, hunter, fishing man. In California, we have the surfer, fast car, “I'm in a band” kinda man. Being a man changes by what you do and where you live ha-ha. (Not saying I agree, just observation)'

When I first read that Charlotte took top honors in the Manliest Cities list, I thought “Finally, a reason to be of Charlotte” (here in N.C., we don't really like them all that much). Then, I read what got them there: “manly” jobs, buying crap and sitting around eating salty junk food while watching NASCAR, football, etc. Basically, it sounds like the men in Charlotte, N.C. are fat, lazy losers who work at jobs that may or may not require a high school diploma. And, by extension, so is the rest of North Carolina in the eyes of the rest of the country. Gee, thanks a lot, Charlotte.
