Part of being People of the Second Chance is that we actively help those who are in need.

Right now their is a CLEAR need in Haiti. Without question there is a huge crisis for a nation that was ALREADY in brutal turmoil.

One of our favorite organizations is Compassion International.

Both of us have seen Compassion’s work first hand and they have set up a way that you can give to help the people in Haiti. You can give with absolute confidence knowing your dollars are going to help those in desperate need.

Let’s step up! YOU CAN DONATE HERE.

I am thinking of Haiti, and other huge tragedies like Sri Lanka, Myanmar, China, Katrina, and I am wondering how the Church can start to mobilize to be prepared to care for the whole person after these events that keep happening. So many people are disillusioned, discouraged, and questioning. I have seen so many comments about how prayer doesn’t work, God wasn’t present, and how people are turning from faith. Only a few can go to Haiti now to serve, but the rest of us can do something beyond just donating (which I hope we all do). We can start to work now to prepare to care for those who have lived through this tragedy so after the physical wounds are healed they will also find help to be mentally, emotionally, and spiritually healthy. We can learn about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Vicarious Trauma, and other emotional responses to being exposed to this and start to prepare our churches, organizations, families, and friends to be involved in the long term care and recovery. This is not just for the victims but also the rescuers who are experiencing trauma and will need help to recover. It also applies to so many of our military who have been through horrible trials. It comes through our daily conversations with people now who are here and doubting that God is real and cares. We are people who need a second chance, but I hope we will also find ways to be involved with giving second chances and hope to others by walking into the mess with them, even when it can be really hard to understand and relate to what they have experienced. I want to be a part of the long term hope and healing for these people and for the Church!

Churches can get in the game collectively also. @ Central we will take an offering and give it to Compassion’s disaster relief fund for Haiti.

All I see is give, give, give … but no one wants anything but my money! Just money isn’t going to solve the problem – it’s going to take food, water, medicine, skilled and unskilled labor, heavy equipment – and that’s just for a start. Money does nothing by itself – it’s what money will buy, and there are some things that money won’t buy.

I guess it makes most people feel good to give money to a cause – but would Jesus just give money? I don’t think so – he’d show up and start digging people out of the rubble, he’d be healing the injured, feeding the masses, and ministering to people’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

If you’re sitting back feeling good about that check you just wrote, maybe you ought to ask yourself if that’s what God really wants you to do – or if that’s *all* God wants from you! Maybe God is whispering in your ear – get on a plane, fill in for someone else who just got on a plane for Haiti, or help in a hundred other ways to support those in Haiti or those going down to Haiti. Maybe your church’s ministry team is getting on a plane, and they need someone to preach this Sunday, or look after the kids in children’s church.

Don’t be driven by either compassion or by emotion – get down on your knees and ask God – “What do YOU want me to do?” He will put you in that perfect place to help… :)
