BOOKS STILL CHANGE THE WORLD
Posted by Jud Wilhite:
Here’s my reading list for 2010. I should warn you though—I’m a geek. I read books by dead people for fun and when I don’t, I start to get cranky.
This isn’t exhaustive, but I plan to get through these books.
City of God, Augustine. This is a tomb of a book and I’ve read parts of it. This year I plan to read through all of it, along with some help by Gerard O’Daly and his Augustine’s City of God: A Reader’s Guide. This will likely take me many months as I read multiple books at a time.
The Enchiridion on Faith, Hope, and Love, Augustine. This is a smaller book Augustine wrote to a friend on key belief and practice issues. The term “enchiridion” just means handbook.
Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design, Stephen C. Meyer. This promises to be an interesting look at intelligent design for the general reader.
There Is a God: How the World’s Most Notorious Atheist Changed His Mind, Anthony Flew. I did doctoral work in philosophy and often turned to Flew’s dictionary of philosophy for help. I’ve wanted to read this since it was released.
Christianity’s Dangerous Idea, Alistair McGrath. I’m halfway through this history of Protestantism and plan to finish it in 2010.
The Christian in Complete Armour, William Gurnall. I hope to work through at least the first of this three volume classic of puritan literature. It is one of those books that I’ve known about for years, but I’ve never really attempted to read it.
I’m also reading through the New Testament on YouVersion with my wife!
Have any of you read these books? Any other great books you’d recommend for the future?

Whoa. Those sound amazing. My dad is a creation guru/geek! He’d love the one on intelligent design.
Do you read anything by Andrew Murray? He’s my favorite dead guy/mentor.
Totally changed my life.
My absolute favorite, life changing books were Deeper Christian Life, Humility, and Absolute Surrender all by Andrew Murray (who is a confirmed dead guy…).
I also annually re-read at least parts of Foxe’s Book of Martyrs for a little perspective on life. I also liked the unabridged version for it’s historical context on the persecution of and by the Church.
Looks like you’ve got an exhausting list there. Let us know if you stumble across anything profound that us laypeople might understand. =)
I’ve been wanting to read Augustine forever. Maybe I should make this the year. Although I guess I won’t start with City of God.
One I read about once a year is Here I Stand on the life of Martin Luther. That man is so inspiring.
My first quarter goal is to re-read “The Pursuit of God” by Tozer, then go onto “The Knowledge of the Holy”.
jud im not sure any of those selections would be considered “light reading”
love it!
I going to make myself read one non-fiction book soon. So I’m glad you are covering us on all of the non-fiction reading for our house.
I’ll take care of the fiction reading for us!
How about Steve Gallagher… “At the Altar of Sexual Idolatry”
“The Divine Conspiracy”. Don’t die before you read this book.
check out deadly viper! Amazing!!!! My buddy @patrickmitchell hooked me up!! http://bit.ly/ddo66U
Leading with a Limp, Dan Allender
Must. Read.
[Ironically I walk with limp. Which is what drew me to the book. My left leg is still longer than my right leg, but I call it my swagger!]
Natalie, I love Andrew Murray…great stuff
Ed, The Pursuit of God is one of my faves, I need to re-read it as well.
Lex, Luther is so punchy and…electric. Great stuff
So little time, so many great books/ideas out there. Great time to be alive!
Etienne, Foxe’s Book of Martyr’s is such a great challenge to one’s faith. So rich!
Lori, nice work rounding things out. I tend to get stuck in non-fiction too, but its nice to shake it up sometimes.
You know what I’d like to see, guys? Books that have influenced you the most list. I’m going to be posting one soon.
I’m almost finished with a pretty heavy one myself. It’s taken me quite a while to get cover to cover on it.
Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader: http://tinyurl.com/yapm8o7
It’s been a terribly interesting read but I can not verify it is a dead-guy material.
I’m biased:
Read Love is an Orientation by Andrew Marin!
Funniest thing I’ve read today, “I read books by dead people for fun and when I don’t, I start to get cranky.”
Second funniest thing is Jud in the comment section addressing “Lex” and using “Luther” as the next word.
Lex Luther. Yes, I am that easily amused.
As for reading list, I’ve made a 2 yr commitment to read some of the fiction classics that I skipped in high school. “East of Eden” is so far my favorite of them and a stunning look into the character of man.
Hey Jud… I am totally digging your stuff. Trying to line up the place in Colorado for me and my wife! Thanks for your influence. Your style is refreshing.
Ragamuffin Gospel
The Parousia by James Stuart Russell. Originally written in the 1800’s.
Destined to Reign and Unmerited Favor, both by Joseph Prince (LOVE his stuff!)
