googlevoicepreview

Posted by Mike Foster:

This weekend I’m thrilled to be speaking at Central’s weekend services. I’m talking about TNT living. You can join us online or click here for service times.

So Jud left me a voicemail yesterday. Google Voice transcribed it for me. I laughed when I read some of the message.

Posture hey buddy. It’s just.
So, okay I can talk to you that we, I’ll check with Lawrence.
Hi Keith and make sure to. So where that is. Thanks buddy. Talk to you soon.

LET ME TRY AND TRANSLATE:

Posture=Foster
It’s Just=It’s Jud
Check with Lawrence=Check with Lori

The rest of it? Who knows? Anyways, you get the point. GOOGLE VOICE ISN’T LISTENING VERY WELL!

One of the most loving things we can do for people is listen. And to really hear them.

Let’s avoid being a “Google Voice” to those who trust us with their words, feelings, and their story.

So are you a good listener? How are you at remembering people’s names?

I am terrible at remembering names… it's pretty embarassing when I have to ask names again after about 45 seconds of discussion. For some people it goes in one ear then out the other… I don't think it ever even enters the ear for me. Pretty strange.

remembering names is hard for me too…i know people have “methods and tips” that help you remember names, etc…i just dont know those tips :)

This cracks me up! I can't believe how messed up that is! It has a long way to go!

I try and pride myself in being the guy that never has to say, “Whats your name again, I am terrible with names”
I like to remember peoples names and remember their face. I actually think I do a pretty good job at it, but part of the reason is that is the way I am wired.
But active listening is a struggle for me. Now the interesting thing is that if I actively listen to someone then I remember their name, but if I have met someone for the first time and do not listen to what they are saying because I am focused on what I am going to say next I forget their name.

One exercise for me is to pay attention to their name first, even repeat it and then go on from there. I find that i remember their name and then when I see them again I am able to recall it and it means something to them that I remembered them.

But, it all starts with active listening.

Really bad with names. Been trying to use pneumonic devices to help lately.

I've actually been pretty impressed with the Google voice-to-text capability on Android/Evo4G. But that transcription is definitely hilarious :)

I'm a terrible, horrible, no good name rememberer!

  • http://leadingandlovingit.com Lori

I'm afraid that this “Lawrence” thing might stick. So in a proactive step … neither of you should call me Lawrence. :)

    Yo Posture,

Thanks for sharing, even at the expense of Just and Larry.

    Love you guys.

Absolutely no offense meant toward Jud here….
…..but what we hear is only as good as the communication was to start with. If the person speaking isn't saying things well, our listening skills can only take us so far. Accents, cultural issues, slang and jargon, etc. can all affect communication too.

I think we've all been “Google Voice” to someone who was trying to reach out to us before and communicate something that they wanted us to know. In my case, I have a household of 5 so I know there are lots of opportunities daily not to mention work and other activities. But after being on either end of “Google Voice” I think its important to be humble, be kind and remember before you react, it could have been you.

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

i would totally understand you being a “google voice” in a household of 5 :)

    nice! :)

    ok….lawrence.

at least youre in good company robert! youre definitely not alone…maybe we should start a support group.

As adults I think most of us (myself included) forget playing postman/telephone as kids. It's hilarious to hear the stories change but I was reminded after hearing a room full of kids playing it, how important communication is and how easily a message can get distorted. A good lesson for us all to help guard against becoming an “unChristian” Christian.

A support group or a little talking mouse in my pocket that's good with names. Either one would be fine.

So funny, but so true. We tend to put listening on the back-burner of our priority list because we feel as is it will be easy to remember a name or date. If we as people flipped the priorities of our lives and made listening #1…. I can only imagine what a drastic change we would have in our lives.

    Ha ha! Brilliant. :-)

I suck at remembering names, but annoying good at remembering like every detail of conversations I've had with them.

    Great story, great application!

I love Google Voice vm transcription. My kids call it and leave ridiculous messages, just so we can read em and LAUGH!
