This portrait is of my friend Jennifer.
For much of her early life she was told that she was ugly.
And for many years she believed this about herself.
On the day we took this photo she privately shared with me the story of her tattoos. She said she purposely chose ugly tattoos for her arms. She wanted the ink to validate the label of ugly in a very physical way. She sadly believed the lie of her label.
But things have changed for Jennifer and she has broken free from societies shallow idea of attractiveness.
She shared about a Cover Girl commercial that declared, “Inner beauty is important, but not nearly as important as outer beauty.” Today, she knows now this is a lie and that her true beauty comes from within.
Jennifer now dedicates her life to finding the gorgeous in others by leading the Disabilities Ministry at Crossroads. Every week she devotes countless hours working with individuals with physical and mental disabilities. It is easy for her to see their beauty and dignity.
No matter what people say, remember you are beautiful.
