Jeremy sent me this link last light to Matthew’s wonderful blog.

The Google search for “Why are Christians so…” delivers these search results:

Why are Christians so…stupid, mean, ignorant, hateful, intolerant, angry, dumb, crazy, arrogant…

Go to Google. Try it. I did. I got basically the same results.

It’s completely stunning. And sad.

It is times like this that I’m really glad you are here and that the POTSC community is committed to trying to figure out second chances, radical love and acceptance.

I can’t change Christianity…or Google for that matter…but I can change myself…and for now, that’s probably the best place for all of us to start.

    Man this sucks…

Sucks for the atheists too though. Do the same search, but swap ATHEIST for CHRISTIAN.

    Apparently we’re all blowing it.

I got mad at Google, so I asked “Why is Google so”. Turns out Google is pretty racist.

  • Lindseyrnobles

Wow…I just did the same thing with a few other religions and they were just as stunning and sad.

Eh. I would be surprised if I didn’t see something like that on Google. Any time you stand for anything, like Jesus, you’ll have haters. Do that same search for any term where people would have strong differing opinions (like ryan said atheists, or liberals, Democrats, conservatives, Republicans, etc.) and you’ll get a similar result. Some things may be valid, most won’t be. It’s fashionable today to brand those with whom you disagree as derogatory terms.

Wow. a good list of things to check in myself, if nothing else. Change starts today, with each person individually. Thanks for posting this Mike!

I agree, we need strive to be more gracious, and we need to start with ourselves.
But about the search: “Why is ____ so ____?” is a negative question, almost guaranteed to be finished negatively.

grt point pete…though i wonder what would happen if you put in positive words…if it would be so drastically negative…interesting experiment to say the least…

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

i typed in the word “Facebook” and it came out pretty positive :)

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

ryan…you totally crack me up with your comments! :)

  • Budda

It is not negative. It is real. Try “Why are buddhists so”.

  • Pat

I typed in puppies, babies, doctors, grandmas, chocolate and s_x … they all had their fair share of negative except for puppies.

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

so we need to be more like puppies i guess? :)

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

i typed the word Buddhist and the search result was….happy…

so how many times do I have to google Why are Christians so loving/caring/awesome/passionate/grace-filled/different for them to be the suggestions in google?

  • Andispud

Try out why are the english so and you’ll get arrogant, cold and reserved. I’m not sure I’m impressed.

    Mike,

I look at this from another perspective. Might it be that everyone already knows why Christians are nice, gracious, generous, loving, peaceful, humble, etc. is because the answer is singularly Jesus? I theorize that it’s only when Christians, as Jesus’ ambassadors, are viewed in opposite light that it requires a search.

I am more encouraged that when you replace “Christian” with “Jesus” along with the verb change to “is” that the results are entirely positive. That should give us hope!

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

i love your positive perspective robert :)

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

try the word buddhist…i think what google is identifying is an overall perception which at some point is rooted in truth…accurate? who knows? either way i hope the results would cause some reflection and motivation to be better grace givers.

I might need to show your comment to a few people. I’m not necessarily known for my positive outlook, but in being washed in the flood of Grace I find myself becoming more and more aware that regardless of the purest of actions someone will always have the opportunity to interpret it in light of their ignorance. I can challenge perception, but in reality I have zero control of it. I must always hold tightly to the Anchor of my soul because it is His perception that ultimately matters.

To those who claim almost anything will gather negative queries: I tried ‘Why are Mormons so…” and got nice, happy, and successful. Definitely something to think about. Great post, Mike.

well like most humans people want to know negitive things and are interested in negitive things like the news its 99% negitivity and its also cause theres so many people faking christainty cause thier afraid of bein judged and many young people (and i use to be one of them) grow up thinkin they are saved but really arent they can be unhappy cause they are not really saved its not thier fault its just what they were taught growin up they think goin to church or reading the bible garenties they are saved cause thats what they were taught and its false so they go around tellin people they are saved and people belieave them and then they see how unhappy, mean, and judgemental, etc. can be

We, as Christians, are not here to make the world love us but to advance the purposes of God on this earth. We are not here to brown nose anyone. I don’t believe we should be mean or unkind, however at times when we have to choose the Truth of the Gospel or the ways of the world we may appear unkind or mean or boring or stupid. I much rather want to be hated by the world and loved by God. Then loved by the world and an enemy of God!
