m night career

Posted by Mike Foster:

I loved “The Sixth Sense!” I really liked “Unbreakable.”

So what in the heck has happened to M. Night Shyamalan?

I saw the trailer for “The Last Airbender” a few months ago and the I immediately whispered to myself, “That looks stupid.” Apparently the critics and millions of moviegoers agreed.

It looks like the moon might be setting on M. Night’s career in Hollywood. And I’m just baffled by this horribleness. I think the above chart says it all!

Last week I saw “Despicable Me” and loved it. “Inception” is the best movie of the year IMHO. And SALT just came out in Bangkok so I might check that out this week.

So what movies have you loved or hated this summer? Any recommendations?

And if you know why M. Night makes totally sucky movies now, please let me know!

    i've seen the A-Team this summer…that's about it…

I saw Grown Ups… Having little kids really mucks up visits to the Theater. We did see The Happening a couple of years ago and didn't know if we were supposed to laugh or not… it was poor even as a B film.

Inception is the greatest movie of the year, agreed.

I'd say M Night makes sucky movies now because he made sucky movies before. Sixth Sense wasn't his first movie…it was just the first one that was any good.

He rode the high through the next two…but it couldn't keep going forever. He's just gotten back into the normal swing of things.

Personally, I liked Lady in the Water though ;)

wow…i was tracking with ya until that Lady In The Water comment :)

was it any good? i havent seen it

    bahaha

You gotta admit, the dude who only worked out 1/2 of his body was a pretty hilarious running gag.

I think there's a combination of things going on here.

    1) The sixth sense was too big to start out with. It set the standard that all of his future movies would be held against. He got really lucky on his first film and it elevated his status as a movie maker too fast, perhaps putting him on a level that he really didn't deserve.

    2) He's making movies too fast. I think his ideas need more time to gestate. He needs to weed through the good from the bad, and really flesh out the good ones. He needs to take more time writing and editing.

    3) Maybe he's really not that good of a film-maker? Back to my first point, maybe he just got lucky with his first film and doesn't really deserve the notoriety and film budgets that his films have received. Maybe he's just not cut out for the summer blockbuster status?

Mike – We'll all have our theories, but here's what amazes me even more: Christopher Nolan is doing what we THOUGHT Night would. Nolan keeps developing creative stories, is no rush to churn out cookie-cutter Hollywood garbage (always seems like it's a couple of years in between films), puts a real artistic touch to each movie, has great acting and always leaves us going, “Wow!” And the result: You are eager when he comes out with a new movie, cause he's now become a name brand. Christopher Nolan = excellence. Do you really think the next Batman movie's going to suck? Of course not. My point's proven. :)

i loved it…it reminded me of those action movies in the 80's/90's like Lethal Weapon… tons of action, sautéed in comedy.

I saw “The Last Airbender” and thought it was good — definitely not as bad as many of the reviewers have said. But I saw it with my 9 year old. Produced by Nickolodeon, it seems that was their target audience. And with that in mind, my son loved it.

The theater only had 5 other people in it though…

i was also a fan of unbreakable, kind of bummed me out that they didn't play the superhero card out earlier in the movie…

Saw The Other Guys. Hilarious. Kinda coarse. But funny.

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

ouch…5 people…what thats about 50 bucks going towards to paying for that film? yikes! glad you liked it though. :)

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

    that is truth!

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

    3 excellent points to consider!

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

    what was that one about?

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

i might have to check that out!

    John stole my thunder.

After Sixth Sense, everyone was waiting for his movies to have the “big shocker ending.” If it didn't happen, we were disappointed.
I think he's a victim of his own success.

Fail to see how this post meshes with your blog theme of “Radical Grace in Life and Leadership.” Grace is about unmerited favor. The underlying theme of this post seems to suggest that respect and kindness for an individual is based on the quality or popularity of their work.

Oh thats a little unfair. Personally, I thought Unbreakable was his Best and believe that Lady in the Water was FAR FAR FAR better than the Village (which I rank as his absolute worst).

He went wrong when he made the Happening. That movie was terrible.

Inception was definitely awesome. Other then that I have been watching TV series on netflix instead of movies. Been obsessed with Burn Notice. Great show.

It is movie Monday. I just read a post over at Jon Acuff's – Stuff Christians Like about Gibson movies. (POTSC received kudos in the post.)
    1) The movies I watch and enjoy rarely have anything to do with the actors or the directors. I consider something good because it brings humor or insight to me. I have given up listening to the critics because I found I didn't enjoy many of the award winning movies. I think we can idolize actors and directors, and when they fall or fail to perform we can neglect to offer grace.
    2) What does it say that only men have posted on this thread? (until now…I am guessing Wolfin is a man, but may be wrong.)

He's apparently quite the egomaniac. Guess he took his early reviews too much like gospel.

My wife and I keep meaning to see inception. It's at the imax, and I really want to see it there.

doood things were bad before the Happening (although that was definitely a disaster). Lady in the Water was a mess, and the Village died like an old lawnmower halfway through.

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

i hate it when Jon copies me :) ….i tend to ignore the critics also…though i do check out rotten tomatoes to see what normal peeps are saying…

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

i would have to agree that Lady in the Water was better than the Village…

  • http://twitter.com/MikeFoster mike foster

yes, but we also talk about failure, screwups, and messes around here…and what we can learn from them.

  • http://theoutlet.wordpress.com/ Sherie

I thought you might like what Jon had to say. =)

I have been thinking of M Night 's movies since a couple days ago and wondered what's he up to these days and found that you blogged about him lol.

My husband and I saw Salt. He liked it. If you like Angelina in other girl kicking butt movies (Tomb Raider, Wanted) then you will probably like this movie too. It was originally supposed to be cast with Tom Cruise in the lead and then when he bailed they decided to let Ang have a go at it. I enjoyed it, but I wasn't blown away. Definitely a fun popcorn eating movie. If you have the time and the movie sure.

And as for M. Night—have you seen the trailer for his next movie? Devil. Not sure what to think. I liked The Village and Lady in the Water. The Happening sucked and I won't see The Last Airbender because I wasn't into the Nick show. But this next one looks like he's trying to be too horror.
